Some shows are canceled after a few seasons. Some only last a few weeks. And then, there are those who are removed from the broadcast after just one night of airing.
In this golden age of television, there are dozens and dozens of critically acclaimed television shows to choose from based on your personal tastes. But even when television is at its best, that doesn’t mean there have been some serious missteps along the way.
Whether the show didn’t reach audiences or a scandal or tragedy caused an unexpected immediate removal from the broadcast schedule, we’ve rounded up the TV shows that were taken off the air after just one episode. While some shows eventually aired the rest of the episodes, all of these shows were scrapped early on for various reasons.

Osbournes Reloaded (2009)
Following the Osbourne family’s hit MTV reality show The Osbournes, this new series was intended to replicate its television success as a variety show that featured the entire family, including sketches, comedy, and musical performances. Fox canceled it after just one episode. The premiere episode was cut to 35 minutes and was panned by critics, with one questioning whether it was the worst variety show of all time.
“Filmed before an entertainment-starved audience (who would still go home hungry) once finished, it involved audience tricks, from kissing a grandmother to receiving a marital ultimatum from a girlfriend,” said the Hartford Courant review readings. Five episodes were not broadcast.
The Hasselhoffs (2010)
The A&E Reality Series Was Destined To Go On Baywatch star David Hasselhoff in his daily life. Less than a million people tuned in for the premiere of two back-to-back episodes, and A&E canceled the show a few days later.
“The program followed the previous one America has talent judge and Baywatch legend while guiding the musical careers of his two daughters, Taylor Ann and Hayley. The first episode aired Sunday night and drew 718,000 viewers, and viewership for the second installment, which aired that same night, fell to 505,000,” People reported at the time. The complete series finally aired in the UK in 2011 on The Biography Channel.
Dot Comedy (2000)
Comedy of points was described as a very early attempt to bring Internet humor to television audiences and premiered in late 2000. The show was hosted by Annabelle Gurwitch and the Sklar brothers. It attracted 4.1 million viewers in its premiere episode before being cancelled. The remaining four episodes were never broadcast.
The Rich List (2006)
From creators of Weakest link and Dog eat dogThis television game show aired for only one episode on FOX in 2006. The show was removed from the time slot and replaced by The oc in the following week after debuting to 4 million viewers.
Competitors were tasked with making lists of things, such as the highest-grossing movies or People‘s Sexiest Men Alive, and the winning team was the one who could name the most. Eamonn Holmes was the host.
Although he failed on FOX, he returned 2 years later on GSN as The money list with Fred Roggin.
Lawless (1997)
The American detective television series starred former NFL player Brian Bosworth, who played a former special forces agent turned motorcycle-riding private investigator in Miami’s South Beach. It performed so poorly that it was canceled after just one episode, leaving five episodes unaired.
“The total of 4.1 million viewers who showed up was a surprisingly low number, especially considering it had a strong introduction from the season premiere of Homefrom where its audience fell by 68%,” Reuters reported at the time.
The Bussey Gang (2008)
The reality show, which focused on The Busseys, a family that runs the independent PCW Wrestling promotion in Texas, was scrapped by TLC after one week. The debut episodes earned ratings of 0.25 and 0.26 for the 9:00 pm and 9:30 pm screenings. TNA star Lance Hoyt also appeared on the show.
Presenter (2007)
presenter was an American semi-scripted comedy and reality television series that aired on Fox that featured Lauren Jones, a former model, “Barker Beauty” on The price is good and winner of the Miss New York pageant who aspires to become a presenter in Texas. The show attracted 2.72 million viewers in the premiere of its back-to-back episodes and was canceled the next morning.
Emily’s Reasons Why Not (2006)
The ABC comedy starred Heather Graham, who played a single woman unlucky in love. A Boston.com review called it an “obvious scam of Sex and the city that you will find yourself making comparisons throughout the entire half hour. Watch Graham do her best Sarah Jessica Parker as a fashion-conscious New York editor. Listen to her plaintive voice-over narration; meet her loyal best friends, including a gay man; and, of course, meeting her Mr. Big, an emotionally unavailable writer played by Mark Valley.” ABC canceled the show after airing one episode, citing negative reception, despite spending millions on advertising. The six filmed episodes were later broadcast in several other countries.
Public Morals (1996)
The show was an American sitcom that aired on CBS in October 1996, based on a group of detectives and others in a city’s vice squad. Lead stars included Peter Gerety and Donal Logue. Bill Brochtrup’s character, John Irvin, from New York Police Blue He also appeared and returned to New York Police Blue after this program was cancelled.
It was poorly received, faced criticism for vulgar language and humor involving racial stereotypes, and was scrapped after a single episode.
Proving Ground (2011)
The popular science reality show G4 was hosted by Ryan Dunn and Jessica Chobot and put stunts from video games, movies and comics to the test in the real world.
It was tragically removed after one episode, when Ryan died in an unrelated car accident shortly after the first episode aired. The remaining eight episodes were eventually aired after an extended hiatus and were subsequently discontinued.
Maxx (2020)
This show had a strange start, technically counting as retired after one episode, only to be revived later. It premiered at the UK’s E4 in April 2020, but was replaced after one episode by Brooklyn nine nine. E4’s head of comedy told the British Comedy Guide that the sudden programming change was a response “to the evolving viewing habits of our audience”, adding: “We champion new comedy and are incredibly proud of this program”. It was later confirmed for a prime time slot on Channel 4 in October and was successfully broadcast.
The first season of OT Fagbenle’s British comedy will premiere in the United States on Hulu. The show “centers on a boy band star named Maxxx. Washed Maxxx has been fading into relative obscurity since the breakup of his group Boy Town, but he begs his former manager, played by Christopher Meloni, to help him fight his inner demons so he can return.
