On December 18, 1994, Botha was threatened by a knife-wielding man when she returned to her apartment in Port Elizabeth after a night out with friends. She was then directed to the next seat and the gunman drove her car to get his gear.
Thieves took her to the wilderness outside the city. The criminals are Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger. They tried to suffocate her after first raping her.
They also stabbed her 37 times in the stomach because Theuns wanted to have her reproductive organs removed. They then abandoned her, leaving her with numerous wounds. The perpetrators were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
