Ali Akbar is an Indian film director. He works in Malayalam film industry. Ali Akbar is a prominent screenwriter and lyricist. He has directed more than twenty Malayalam films, including Pai Brothers (1995), Junior Mandrake (1997), Grama Panchayat (1998), Kudumba Varthakal (1998), and Bamboo Boys (2002). In December 2021, he was in the news for converting his religion from Islam to Hinduism after he was trolled with smiling emoticons by a particular section of the community on social media following the news of General Bipin Rawat’s death.

In a conversation with a television media house, Ali Akbar publicly said that he is changing his religion from Islam to Hinduism, as most of the smiling reactions on the post of Bipan Rawat’s death were from Islamist social media users. He said,
Unfortunately, 99% (of the derogatory posts) were from my religion. So I decided to leave religion. After seeing many hateful and objectionable tweets on General Bipin Rawat, I felt ashamed of being a Muslim. Not all Muslims are Jihadis but all Jihadis are Muslims. I can’t change them but I can change myself so I am leaving my religion, there are a lot of leaders in Muslim religion but he did not speak a single word against them. They will fight over the appointment of Waqf Board but will not say anything against anti-India people.

Ali Akbar started working as a director in 1988 with the film Mamlakallakkappurathu (i.e. Beyond the Mountains). In 2002, he started writing songs for Malayalam films like Bamboo Boys and Senior Mandrake. In 2020, the film ‘1921: Pooja Muthal Pooja Vaare’ directed by Ali Akbar was highly appreciated. The film was based on the true incident of ‘Malabar Rebellion’ that took place in North Kerala in 1921. The specialty of this film was that it was made with crowdfunding.
Ali Akbar has his own production company ‘Mama Dharam’ which he established in August 2020. This production house was inaugurated by Swami Chidanandapuri who is the head of Kolathur Advaitashramam, an ashram in Kerala.
Politics
Ali Akbar entered politics in 2014 when he contested from Koduvally constituency as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate. He did not get success in these elections and he turned to candidature from Bharatiya Janata Party. Around the same time, he was selected as a committee member when he contested the municipal elections from Kozhikode Corporation. Ali Akbar left the post in October 2021 due to some disagreements with party members.

This is a protest against those who were putting smileys on posts related to the death of CDS General Bipin Rawat. Why aren’t religious leaders correcting them?”

- Before converting, Ali Akbar posted a video on his Facebook account and took on those who were smiling at the death of General Bipin Rawat. Soon, his account was suspended due to a lot of hate comments being received on his videos. In anger, he opened a new account and announced on it that he was leaving his religion because he was blocked on Facebook for raising his voice against wrong. He has written,
The account was blocked within five minutes of speaking out against those who posted the emoji. I can’t accept it, I can’t agree with it, so I’m leaving my religion. I or my family have no religion now. This is the decision. This is my reply to those who posted thousands of smiling emoticons against India.
He further said that those celebrating the death of army personnel should be punished. They said,
The country should identify and punish those who smiled at the death of CDS.”
