Warhol’s entourage meant that Auder had an unconventional childhood. She performed the role of a dominatrix’s daughter as a young child in an underground movie. Auder and Viva left their home in a beat-up automobile and travelled across the country with a cat they had adopted along the way when Auder’s parents divorced when Viva was five years old.
The automobile had no heat, according to Auder. “So at some point, we were without heat in the Rocky Mountains. And whenever my mother said, “Oh God, my feet are just freezing to death,” I would rub one of her feet to keep them warm while she was driving.
Viva, Auder, and Gaby Hoffmann, Auder’s younger half-sister, resided for a while in Manhattan’s Chelsea Hotel, which was well-known for having hosted notable figures including Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas, Virgil Thomson, and Bob Dylan.
I had the best time living there, says Auder of the Chelsea. “Of course, there are roving individuals coming in and out. Although there were frequently police officers present and a few odd characters, a “normal” person might be horrified by the crowd, but no one was ever in any way threatening to me. In truth, I admired the eccentrics.
High Maintenance is one of Auder’s roles in the HBO series. She is also a yoga instructor who is well known for mocking the commercialization of yoga on Instagram. In her recent memoir, Don’t Call Me Home, she reflects on her unusual upbringing.
On an Interview
She was the most gorgeous woman I had ever seen, and when I was younger, I was quite impressed with her. Additionally, I enjoyed it when other people recognised her in public, which occasionally happened. It really tickled my fancy. She was, in my opinion, the world’s smartest and most admirable woman. And since she is who she is, I don’t believe she gave it much thought, such as “I want to be a celebrity” or “I am a celebrity.” She was genuinely just going through the motions. And her encounter with Warhol was just one of those strange synchronicities that happened on the streets of New York in the 1960s and probably won’t ever happen again.
