Alexander Chapman Ferguson, son of Elizabeth and Alexander Beaton Ferguson, was born on 31 December 1941 in the Govan district of Glasgow, in his grandmother’s house on Shieldhall Road. His father worked in a shipyard as a carpenter’s assistant. He grew up in a tenement at 667 Govan Road with his parents and younger brother Martin, who also became a footballer.
Ferguson attended Broomloan Road Primary School before going to Govan High School. He began his football career at Govan’s Harmony Row Boys Club before moving to Drumchapel Amateurs, a youth team with a good track record of producing senior footballers.
