Alexandrea Borstein was born on February 15, 1971 in Highland Park, Illinois. Her parents are Judy and Irv Borstein. Her great-grandmother survived the Holocaust and eventually moved to the United States. Her parents are both mental health professionals and she has two older brothers. She is Jewish and grew up in Deerfield, Illinois. She and her family later moved to California.
Borstein attended Chatsworth Charter High School in Los Angeles, California. At the time, her school bus driver was John Malkovich. After graduating from high school, she entered San Francisco State University.
