Who is Alessia Zecchini, the diver from The Deepest Breath?
Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini has a long list of world records to her credit.
Zecchini’s talent and passion for the sport were inspired by Natalia Molchanova, a great Russian champion free-diver, but she was not allowed to compete until she was 18.
Zecchini was a competitive international competitor by the time she was in her early 20s.
What happened to Stephen Keenan and Alessia Zecchini?
The safety driver for Zecchini was Stephen Keenan. At the age of 39, he, unfortunately, passed away while supervising a dive by Zecchini into The Blue Hole of Egypt, one of the world’s most dangerous dive locations.
Zecchini and Keenan carefully planned the descent, which involved swimming down an underwater tunnel without a guiding line, but their timings didn’t quite work out as they had hoped.
When Zecchini made it through the tunnel, she was unable to find the rope that would have led her to the surface and ended up swimming in the opposite direction from where Keenan was scheduled to meet her at the other end.
When Keenan found her at a depth of about 50 meters, he assisted in bringing her to the surface, but it’s believed that he passed out at some point and died while rescuing Zecchini.
Zecchini muses on the dive that resulted in Keenan’s death towards the very end of the Netflix video, saying: “Maybe I should have done more. If I had been more aware, I’m not sure.
The hardest part is that there was nothing we could do to help save him, she continues. He saved me, but I was powerless to save him.
In her most recent Instagram post, Zecchini stated: “The only reason I agreed to be a part of [the documentary] is to let the world know what a wonderful and special person [Keenan] was so that even those who don’t know what free-diving is can appreciate his immense humanity.” The documentary will be released on July 18th.

Zecchini, who is now 31 years old, is still active in the free-diving industry.
Her official website states that she holds 35 world records and has received 17 gold medals from the international athletics federation.
With a monofin, she descended -177 meters at Vertical Blue.
