Famed actor Alec Baldwin faces criminal charges following a tragedy on the set of Rust in October 2021. The former Saturday Night Live star fired a gun on the set of the film. The fatal shot killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded film director Joel Souza. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said the manslaughter case could begin this summer.
“So what I’m going to do is check my schedule and check on jury selection,” he said. “I’m going to get moving to see if we can reach an agreement between the July trial dates and the June trial dates. “I will send you that order [On February 26]”
Baldwin insists he didn’t pull the trigger
Prop weapons usually do not have live ammunition. But unfortunately he did it and killed a person. Baldwin was holding the gun that fired the fatal shot. But the actor insists he didn’t pull the trigger.
“Baldwin has insisted almost from day one that he did not pull the trigger of the 1880 gun that killed Hutchins. He says the gun went off in his hand. Following a botched investigation by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and, more recently, independent weapons examiners hired by special prosecutors have taken a different view,” Deadline reports.
“Furthermore, in violation of established standard security procedures, Baldwin was pointing the gun directly at the unshielded Hutchins when he fired during rehearsal for the already problematic low-budget film.”
The actor’s lawyer criticizes the scheduling of the trial
It has been more than two years since the incident occurred. And there is still little to no progress on the trial start date.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Baldwin’s attorney, Alex Spiro, disagreed over the trial’s scheduling. Spiro argued that because so much time has passed since the incident, he should be given top priority.
“There is no reason why this case, given that this tragic accident occurred years ago, should not be prioritized given the complexity, the media attention, the promises made to determine funding and the other impossible trial schedules of others lawyers,” Spiro said. .
