livelihood
Akhil Sheoran took interest in sports at a very young age. Growing up in a place where shooting was a popular sport, he started focusing on shooting in the 8th grade because his school had a shooting range. Once he made it to the Indian team, he had to take care of the financial responsibility of purchasing his equipment and covering training expenses. However, at that time he lacked the necessary funds and did not come from a well-to-do family. To help him, his parents took out a loan at interest to help him purchase the necessary guns, which enabled him to continue his training. In 2012, Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit organization, began supporting Akhil’s training and preparation. In an interview, Akhil Sheoran told how he got into shooting,
Shooting was done as an extra-curricular activity in our school. So I started the sport quite early and was using school equipment until my dad got me my first rifle in 2011. The very next year I won my first medal. I have been supported by Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) since 2012. They’ve made sure I have everything I need and that’s been a big help.”
Akhil continued to focus on shooting while studying at Hansraj College and Jamia Millia Islamia.
Regarding his MBA studies at Jamia Millia Islamia, Akhil said,
I chose this course because I wanted to pursue this field after finishing my shooting career. When I am away from shooting, studies serve as a means for me to concentrate and when I return to shooting, I am mentally refreshed and sharp.
Akhil Sheoran is trained by Olympian Deepali Deshpande.
Akhil Sheoran missed out on a quota for Rio Olympics by just 1.2 points at the Asian Olympic Qualifying Shooting Championships in New Delhi. His hard work paid off when he secured an Olympic quota for India in the 3-position men’s event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2023. In the championship, Akhil won the bronze medal. Men’s Rifle 3-Position Competition. His performance earned him a total score of 450 in the final round, earning him an Olympic quota for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Akhil was the fifth Indian to secure a berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Akhil Sheoran not only secured the individual Olympic quota, but he and his teammates Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar and Neeraj Kumar won the men’s 3P team gold medal with a total score of 1750.
After his victory, Akhil said in an interview,
It really means a lot to me. We have been working very hard for this for so many years. The world comes once in four years. Winning medals and quotas is really very satisfying. I could have pushed a little harder for silver or gold at the end, although the distance was a little more for gold. I want to dedicate this quota to my country and thank my federation, SAI and everyone who has supported me till date.
