[TADA] A case was registered against Perarivalan for his alleged role in the murder and he was found accused of purchasing and supplying 9 volt batteries for an explosive device to Sivarasan, the mastermind of the murder. On 28 January 1998, a special TADA court in Chennai sentenced all 26 people, including accused AG Perarivalan, to death in the case. Perarivalan was convicted of conspiracy (IPC 120-B) and murder (IPC 320) in this case. On 11 May 1999, the Supreme Court of India sentenced AG Perarivalan to death. On 18 February 2014, a Supreme Court division bench comprising the Chief Justice of India, P. Sathasivam, and Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Shiv Kirti Singh commuted Perarivalan’s death sentence to life imprisonment along with two other convicts, Murugan and Santhan. Big revelation after 26 years
There have been a few twists and turns in the story of Perarivalan. It is also believed that AG Perarivalan was the victim of a flawed investigation. Significant progress was made in the case 26 years after his arrest. On 27 October 2017, ex-CBI officer V. Thiagarajan filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India, claiming that he was the one who had recorded Perarivalan’s confession in 1991 when the investigation process was going on. He further said that he omitted a part of Perarivalan’s confession, in which he had confessed that he was unaware of the fact that the batteries he had purchased and given to mastermind Sivarasan would be used in the IED that killed Rajiv Gandhi. Will put. He also cited a wireless message dated May 7, 1991, which was sent by key conspirator Sivarasan to Pottu Amman, a top LTTE functionary. In the message, Sivarasan can be heard saying, “No one knows our intention except the three of us” – himself, Subha and Dhanu (the suicide bomber). Perhaps there is a possibility that Perarivalan was not informed about the conspiracy. However, in 2018, the CBI rejected former CBI interrogator V. Thiagarajan’s claims that he had deliberately left out a part of Perarivalan’s confession. The CBI report further stated that Perarivalan was deeply involved in the conspiracy to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.
