News about Adnan Syed

Adnan Syed, the Baltimore resident accused of involvement in the murder of 17-year-old Hae Min Lee, the subject of the popular podcast series, has been found guilty of murder in a Maryland court.

Syed, 41, was found guilty of killing Lee in 2000 and sentenced to life in prison, while repeatedly asserting his innocence. Last September, state prosecutors announced that they had found new information that cast doubt on Syed’s conviction and suggested two more suspects.

Later, a district court judge overturned Syed’s sentence after finding that the prosecution had neglected to share all the evidence in favor of the defense. The prosecution did not re-indict the case, but put in court records a “nolle prosequi”. Hae Min’s brother, Young Lee, filed a complaint in December, alleging that prosecutors broke the law by not providing victims or their representatives with sufficient notice of the meetings so they can attend directly.

A Maryland appeals court ruled Tuesday that the state violated Lee’s rights by giving him only one business day’s notice and that the court “has the authority and duty to correct the violations.” there, as long as we can do so without violating Syed’s right not to be doubly endangered.” But the ruling also implies that Syed won’t be sentenced for long and that rehab will only last until a retrial.

The decision requires “a new, lawful, and public hearing on the deportation petition, at which Mr. Lee received notice of the hearing allowing him to attend in person, where evidence was presented to him.” out in support of the petition for eviction, and where the Court explains its choice with an explanation. After his release from prison, Syed is currently studying prison reform at Georgetown University’s Institute of Prison and Justice.
