Abida Parveen is a Pakistani Sufi singer, musician, composer, painter and entrepreneur. She is famous as ‘Queen of Sufi Music’. He has sung songs in different languages including Urdu, Sindhi, Saraiki, Punjabi, Arabic and Persian.

Abida Parveen was born on Saturday, 20 February 1954 (age 65 years; as in 2019) in Mohalla Ali Goharabad in Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He received musical training from his father Ustad Ghulam Haider and studied in his music school. He was also trained by Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of Sham Chaurasia Gharana. He obtained a master’s degree from Sindh and also learned Hindi, Urdu and Parsi.

Family, Caste and Husband
He belongs to a Muslim family. His father, Ustad Ghulam Haider, was a singer and music teacher. she has two brothers. She married Ghulam Hussain Sheikh (senior producer of Radio Pakistan) in 1975. Her husband died of a heart attack on an international flight in the early 2000s.
They have two daughters named Pereha Ikram and Mariam Hussain, both of whom are entrepreneurs. They also have a son named Sarang Latif, who is a music director.

She sang her first kalam when she was only 3 years old and started singing professionally at the age of six. In the early 1970s, he started performing at dargahs and urs.
In 1973, he sang the song “Tuhinje Zulfan Jai Band Kamand Vidha” for Radio Pakistan. In 1977, she was announced as the official singer on Radio Pakistan. She made her first TV appearance in 1980 in Sultana Siddiqui’s ‘Awaaz-o-Andaz’. His first composition was ‘Aandhi Chali To Naqsh-e-Kaaf-e-Pa Nahi Mila’, which was written by Mustafa Zaidi.
Since then, he has composed many Kalams. She travels internationally for her tours and concerts. He never sang for any film but his pre-recorded songs have been used in many films. His first song which was featured in a film was ‘Sajan De Haath;’ It was featured in the Pakistani film “Zil-e-Shah” (2008). He sang the OST for ‘Yaar Ko Humne’ from the Pakistani TV serial “Shehr-e-Zaat (2012)”. He released his first album “Jee Sindhi Mehfil” in 1981.
His most famous album is “Raqs-e-Bismil”, released in 2001.
Abida is known for her songs ‘Yaar Ko Humne’ from the album “Raqs-e-Bismil”, ‘Jab Se Tune Mujhe’ from the album “Ghazal Ka Safar” and the song ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’ from Bulleh Shah. Poem.

- Abida received music training from her father. She calls her father ‘Baba Sen and singer’. He and his father used to perform together at the shrines of Sufi poets. Seeing her talent, her father chose Abida as his musical successor instead of his two sons when she was just five years old.
- Abida spent most of her childhood learning singing and music and avoided doing household chores. Her mother would always argue as to why she wouldn’t cook or clean and her father would always intervene and say that his daughter would not do chores at home. She was so engrossed in music that she never went out to play and would sit with her father the whole day.
- Abida had no friends in her childhood and no one liked to play with her. His only friend was Subhan.
- Abida plays pump organ, keyboard, harmonium and sitar.
- She calls her daughters ‘Amma’.
- She mainly sings Ghazal, Thumri, Khayal, Qawwali, Raga (Raga), Sufi Rock, Classical and Semi-Classical music. However, his specialty is Qafis, a solo genre that uses the songs of Sufi poets accompanied by percussion and harmonium.
- Her husband Ghulam Hussain Shaikh left his job to manage and advise Abida’s career. After his death, his daughter, Mary, took over that role and, as a result, her career took a more professional path thereafter.
- He has his own unique style of clothing, which he has created himself. She wears a long simple frock buttoned up to the neck, covered with a coat. Along with this, she carries an ‘Ajrak’, a Sindhi scarf. They claim that their Ajrak comes from the Dargah (mausoleum) of Sufi saint Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
- Abida Parveen worked with Shehzad Roy for the song ‘Zindagi’, which was based on the social problem of children.
- In 1988, his performance in Chicago was recorded by the Hazrat Amir Khusro Society of Art and Culture, which was released as an LP of his songs.
- In 2002, she went to India to record her album ‘Faiz’. There he met Lata Mangeshkar, who was recording in a room at the Western In-Door Studio. Talking about the incident she says-
I was recording in one room of Western In-Door Studio and when I came to know that Lataji (Lata Mangeshkar) was also recording in another room, I went to meet her. Once didi came to know about my presence, she brought her entire family to meet me. She kept chatting with me on various topics for a long time and when someone asked how a great singer like her was praising a Pakistani singer like me, she simply said, “Real gold always shines!” It was a touching compliment from such a great artist.”
- He has shared the stage with famous singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan many times. Talking about Nusrat he said-
He was one of the few Indo-Pak artists who knew how to sing in public. How to sing a Ghazal, Qawwali, Kaafi or Sargam on stage in the presence of thousands of people in an attractive manner so that each one in the audience gets a chance to understand the nuances is not an easy art but he was a master of it.
- In the 1990s, Parveen licensed her spiritual ghazals to Bollywood, as her spiritual brother Khan used to record songs for Bollywood.
- She has also appeared in Coke Studio in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th seasons of the show. Talking about her experience on the show she says-
This project that Rohail Hayat has started is really great and I would like to be a part of it for a long time. The music coming out of this project reaches both the heart and the soul and it always compliments the lyrics without losing sight of Kalam’s true message. This platform is based on the messages of our Sufi elders.”
- On 28 November 2010, he suffered a heart attack while performing at a concert in Lahore. After which he had to undergo angioplasty and angiography.
- In December 2012, she started her own venture named ‘Abida Parveen Gallery’. The gallery is run by his daughters and displays his awards, achievements for his fans, music records, jewellery, paintings and designer clothes for sale. The AP Gallery also includes a music recording studio.
- In 2016, he collaborated with a Canadian orchestra and an Indian music duo, Salim-Sulaiman, for a special song, ‘Noor-e-Ilahi’, which was released on Eid.
- Apart from singing in Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi and Persian, she has also sung the famous Nepali song ‘Ukali Orli Haruma’ in a concert in Kathmandu, Nepal.
- In 2017, Abida Parveen was named as the Peace Ambassador of the ‘South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation’ (SAARC).
- In 2012, she judged the singing reality show ‘Sur Shettra’ along with Roona Laila and Asha Bhosle. The show is a musical battle between Pakistani and Indian singers, captained by Atif Aslam and Himesh Reshammiya respectively.

Pakistan seems cut off from outside. But it is built and running on the prayers of our Sufi kings, our Pirs. Poor people, rich people – we are all servants of God… I am fortunate. My audience is my God.”
- He has performed many concerts and tours internationally. It is being told that at one of his concerts a large number of people started crying uncontrollably. Similarly, people had become unconscious in another of his concerts. Emergency people revived him, but he refused to leave because he wanted to see the entire concert.
- During one of his performances in Bahrain, he received gifts and jewelery from his audience, after which he stood up and said,
This is worldliness. I have no connection with it. I am not interested in this.”
- In 2013, she sang ‘The Pilgrimage’ at the Manchester International Festival, composed by renowned English composer John Tavener.
- In 2019, he released his YouTube series, “Bazm-e-Rang”, which features artists like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam, Khamaj and many more. The series marks the directorial debut of his son Sarang Latif.
