Abhishek started his acting career in the year 1986 with the Bengali film ‘Pathbhola’. The film was directed by Tarun Majumdar and stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Tapas Paul, Utpal Dutta, Sandhya Roy and Shakti Thakur in the lead roles. He received very good reviews. For his performance in his first film, and later in 1988, he played the role of Sundar in the film ‘Ora Charjan’. The film featuring Abhishek Chatterjee along with Prosenjit Chatterjee and Debashree Roy was directed by Samit Bhanja and produced by Ranja Film Enterprise. Subsequently, he became a part of two other films, Tumi Koto Sundar and Surer Akashe in the same year. Abhishek Chatterjee honed his skills with each passing role and became one of the prime choice of directors to work with. In 1999, he worked in films like Toofan, Maryada and Amar Prem. He played the role of Abhijeet alongside Ranjit Mallick, Anil Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Ruma Guha Thakurta and Dilip Roy and got his career breakthrough in the drama film Indrajeet directed by Anjan Chowdhary.

Abhishek Chatterjee made his Bengali television debut in 2013 with Star Jalsa’s television serial ‘Tapur Tupur’. This series showed the story of two sisters who had completely opposite views towards life. After taking a break from films for some time he marked his television lent. Talking about his choice to do a television series, he said,
The present system has changed a lot. Production houses have specific lobbies. He works with a group of artists. Most of the actors of old times are Brahmins today. Deepakada (Chiranjeet) is still working. Tapasada (Pal), Arjunda (Chakraborty) are not doing any work.”
Death
Abhishek Chatterjee died of a heart attack on 24 March 2022 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Reportedly, he was shooting for a television serial at the time. Yesterday, he had also complained of stomach uneasiness during the shooting. The entire Bengali film fraternity was in mourning after knowing the news of Abhishek Chatterjee’s sudden death. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also paid tribute to the veteran actor. She took to Twitter to express her condolences to Abhishek’s family and tweeted,
Sad to know about the untimely demise of our young actor Abhishek Chatterjee. Abhishek was talented and versatile in his performances and we will miss him. This is a big loss for TV serials and our film industry. My condolences to his family and friends.”

Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta! In ’96-’98, they formed an alliance and released me from about 30-32 pictures. At that time I was number one in Tollywood. I had no work for almost a year. I sat down and went into depression. After a few years I joined this journey. After this, contact with the industry was completely lost. Then I heard people saying, ‘The consecration is over.’ It will be difficult to hear all this. But I was confident.”
He added,
I have always been Prosenjit’s main rival. I noticed several times, he was making some noise. But I always thought of him as a friend. That’s why I didn’t take any serious steps. And I had said some things about Rituparna in an interview, which she did not like. After this he decided not to work with me anymore. Swapnada (Saha) told me, you solve the matter. But I have not done anything wrong, so the question of apology does not arise. After that I started the journey.”
